Remove the carpet staples with sink nails and pliers with a nail set. Walk around the entire floor to check for cracks, squeaks or any other repairs that should be undertaken before sanding and refinishing hardwood floors.  Sanding real wood flooring is a dusty and noisy job. Make sure you take necessary precautions by wearing safety goggles, ear protection and a dust mask. While refinishing the hardwood floors, sand should always be removed in the direction of the grain.
